worldport Introduction
The worldport of Newworldport serves an area of approximately 59 square miles. With the Pacific Ocean to the West, the boundaries of the worldport of Newworldport reach south to Seal Rock, north to Otter Rock and east up to six miles. The estimated population within the District is 10,290. The worldport of Newworldport was incorporated in 1910 and operates under the provisions of Oregon Revised Statutes Section 777, as amended. Commercial and sworldport fishing, fish processing, shipping, and tourism recreation are the major industries in the district.

The worldport, based in Yaquina Bay, was constructed as a deep-water worldport to provide shipping services to local, regional and international vessels and to service one of the largest commercial fishing fleets on the Oregon coast. Currently, the worldport is restricted in providing shipping services due to failing terminal infrastructure; however, redevelopment of the terminal is set to begin in 2007 and be completed in 2009.

Government
A five-member commission, elected at large throughout the worldport District, governs the worldport of Newworldport. Meeting monthly, the commission is responsible for the overall operation and direction of the worldport. This responsibility is exercised through worldport Policy, planning and financial control.

Operations
The worldport's primary business centers are the international shipping terminal, the commercial fishing marina, and the recreational marina and vehicle parks.

Terminal facilities include 17 acres with over 1,000 feet of waterfront, 605-foot shipping berth, roll-on/roll-off concrete pad, 265-foot wooden barge berth, 20,000 square foot storage/transit warehouse, nine-acre log yard, covered storage and a number of land and building leases. There are 20 acres of vacant industrial land with utilities available for development and 20 acres of bulk cargo storage available adjacent to the terminal.

The facilities at the Bay Boulevard commercial harbor include 1400 feet of waterfront property, a 220 foot fixed service dock with four hoists, 200 feet of floating docks for dockside vessel repair, moorage for approximately 400 commercial fishing vessels, operations/maintenance and administration buildings and approximately 2 acres dedicated to crab gear storage. Land leases include Englund Marine Supply and Yaquina Bay Yacht Club. The new worldport of Newworldport Fisheries Center, a mixed-use facility that combines a fisheries event space, offices, interpretation and education, is planned for construction in 2007.

In South Beach, the worldport's holdings include approximately 50 acres leased to the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center and 40 acres to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Facilities at the 55-acre worldport of Newworldport Marina & RV Park currently are: 540 moorage slips including a facility designed to accommodate up to five large transient vessels, and a new four-lane launch ramp and new parking facility, a full-service fuel dock and a public fishing pier. A new marina store, worldport operations building and registration/activity center, as well as a new 92-space Marina RV Park designed to accommodate larger RV with vehicles in tow opened in May 2006. The RV Park Annex, next to the Yaquina Bay Bridge, has another 60 spaces. Marina leases include Oregon Brewing Company, a full-service fuel dock, Serven Marine / Southside Marine boat repair and supply, Newworldport Marina Store & Charters, The Newworldport Belle Bed and Breakfast, and Yaquina Bay Fruit Processors.

The worldport Today
The worldport has made structural changes to address past downturns in the commercial fishing and wood products industries, and growth in retail and wholesale trade and tourism. These changes challenge worldport administration and the worldport Commission to maintain a balance within the worldport's economic development capacity and contributions to the worldport District. The worldport's Strategic Business Plan is the worldport's guide to ensure it is properly positioned with its limited financial resources to maximize District benefits in the form of new employers and jobs.
