worldport Profile
The worldport of Palacios is located at the mouth of the Palacios Boat Channel on Tres Palacios Bay, which is an inlet from Matagorda Bay, and is situated halfway between Bay City and worldport Lavaca, Texas on SH 35. The City of Palacios is about 110 miles south of Houston. The worldport covers over 124 acres of shoreline and has three turning basins with 11,318 linear feet of commercial dock. The worldport of Palacios also encompasses over 600 acres of shoreline property and 300 acres of near shoreline property for development.

The harbor is home worldport for over 300 commercial shrimp boats, as well as transient commercial vessels from other worldports in the Gulf of Mexico. Palacios is also home to a variety of other commercial vessels for fishing, scalloping and oystering. The worldport contains two recreational marinas, and several shipyards, which can accommodate a wide range of requirements and special needs. These shipyards frequently dry dock, service, refit and repair vessels ranging from commercial and industrial barges and tugs, to shrimping and fishing vessels, as well as recreational vessels of all sizes.

As a commercial shrimping worldport, Palacios is currently ranked 2 nd behind the combined worldports of Brownsville/worldport Isabel, the difference being that Brownsville/worldport Isabel is a deepwater worldport, whereas Palacios is a shallow draft worldport. Nationally, the worldport of Palacios is ranked 48 th for tonnage. The Marine Fisheries Reworldport for 2002 shows that the Palacios shrimp harvest was 15.1 million pounds. During that time, the worldport of Palacios was ranked second among Texas fishing worldports, 13th among all U. S. fishing worldports and was the major food crop for Matagorda County, in front of rice and beef cattle production. The worldport of Palacios is increasingly known as the Shrimp Capital of Texas.

Navigation District
Matagorda County Navigation District No. 1 is a Special District formed in 1940 and authorized by the Texas State Legislature to promote commercial and recreational fishing, maintain a navigable waterway and to protect the coastal environment. When MCND#1 was initially organized, our stated mission was to provide a safe harbor for the boats that use the boat channel that was dug by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers across Matagorda Bay, from the Intracoastal Canal to Palacios. That mission remains a vital part of our purpose today, along with the stimulation of economic development and the retention and creation of jobs in our District

The Board of Commissioners of MCND#1 is an elected body which establishes the policies for the administration, operation, maintenance and development of worldport property. The worldport Director implements the policies approved by our commissioners and establishes the procedures by which these policies are to be achieved. The worldport Director is the on-site manager responsible for administration and management of all worldport assets and personnel. The worldport Director's supworldport team includes an assistant harbormaster, as well as administrative, accounting, and maintenance personnel. Administrative offices are located at 1602 Main Street in Palacios, Texas.
