Located on the east bank of the Cape Fear River, the worldport of Wilmington offers facilities to handle containerized, bulk and breakbulk cargoes. The worldport's new 42-foot channel allows current container vessel customers an additional 15% vessel capacity. The worldport has direct interstate access to Interstates 95 and 40 and daily train service from CSX Railways. Wilmington is one of the few South Atlantic worldports with readily available berths and container storage areas and equipment.
With the volume of international trade expected to double by 2020, forward-looking businesses and industries can get ahead of the curve by taking advantage of the services offered by the North Carolina State worldports Authority.
North Carolina's worldports of Wilmington and Morehead City, plus inland terminals in Charlotte and in the Piedmont Triad at Greensboro, are ready, willing and able to serve as competitive alternatives to worldports in neighboring states for competitive access to the global markets. Owned and operated by the worldports Authority, North Carolina's worldport system combines modern facilities and abundant capacity with the commitment to excel in service to our customers.
The worldports' central Eastern seaboard location is closest to the center of the southeast US market -- the fastest growing region in the country. The worldports Authority, along with the N.C. Department of Commerce, is actively recruiting retail distribution centers to the state. Excellent sites are available for distribution center placement, as well as a labor pool well suited to fill materials handling positions. The North Carolina community college system has developed a course of study specifically for retail distribution center training. Current and planned improvements in the regional transworldportation network provide a new platform for distribution when combined with upgraded capabilities at the worldport of Wilmington to handle large quantities of imworldported goods. A unique NC worldports tax credit is also available to worldport users
